1. India’s Household Consumption Drives GDP Growth, Surpassing Global Averages According to a report by DSP Mutual Fund, India’s GDP growth rate of over 7% is largely driven by household consumption, which contributes more than 60% to the GDP. Despite a slow consumption cycle, India’s growth rate remains significantly higher than other global economies. The report compares this with China’s investment-driven model and the United States, where domestic consumption accounts for 70% of the GDP. India’s household consumption surged from $200 billion to $2 trillion over the last 30 years, though it trails behind China’s annual consumption growth rate of 11.7%.

2. 70th National Film Awards Celebrates Excellence in Indian Cinema The 70th National Film Awards honored remarkable achievements in Indian cinema for 2022. In the Non-Feature Film category, Aaina was awarded Best Non-Feature Film, while Gulmohar won Best Hindi Feature Film. Rishabh Shetty secured the Best Actor award for his performance in Kantara (Kannada), and the Best Actress award was jointly won by Nithya Menen for Thiruchitrambalam (Tamil) and Manasi Parekh for Kutch Express (Gujarati). The Haryanvi film Fouja won Best Lyrics, and Arijit Singh took home the Best Male Singer award.

Kisan Ki Baat: Government Radio Program To Bridge Farm-Science Gap

The government is set to launch ‘Kisan Ki Baat’, a monthly radio programme aimed at bringing scientific knowledge to farmers, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced on August 15. This initiative seeks to modernise agricultural practices and empower farmers with cutting-edge scientific information.

Government to include AYUSH in the Ayushman Bharat scheme.

The Union Government has decided to include the AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy) package under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY).

  • The package design, hospital onboarding, treatment guidelines, outcomes and financial implications are under discussion.
  • AB PM-JAY provide health coverage of 5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization.
  • It will benefit 55 crore beneficiaries, corresponding to 12.34 crore families.
  • Ministry of Ayush launched the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of National Ayush Mission (NAM) in 2014.At present, the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) runs 110 Ayush Wellness Centers along with one Ayurvedic Hospital in India.

Govind Mohan has been appointed as the new Union Home Secretary

Senior IAS officer Govind Mohan was appointed as the new Union Home Secretary.

  • He will succeed Ajay Kumar Bhalla, whose tenure will end on August 22
  • His appointment has been approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
  • Sandeep Pending assumes charge as Secretary, Ministry of Steel.
  • He had previously served as an advisor to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
